// EGYPT SINAI, SHARM EL SHEIKH

Well layed-out on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula, with the Red Sea on one side and Mount Sinai on the other, Sharm El Sheikh needs no introduction. With some of the best diving and snorkeling spots over the Red Sea & the region, Sharm El Sheikh also features big named hotels, high quality eateries, an array of water & land sports and bustling nightlife.

Although it's touristy now, the charm of Sharm el Sheikh is its variety. The resort caters for divers shoppers and people hungry for tours and activities. You can be active - going scuba diving is breathtaking or just spend time relaxing. The food and drink is also good.

Shopping can be exhausting having to haggle but well worth it for the bargains and memories you bring home. Just feel the heat until the early hours and rest or climb Mount Sinai!

Sharm El Sheikh is set on a promontory overlooking the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba. Its strategic importance led to its transformation from a fishing village into a major port and naval base for the Egyptian Navy. The big city today is subdivided into five homogeneous centers namely: Naama Bay, Nabq Bay, Ras Nusrani, Ras Om el-Sid and Sharm El Maya.

Sharm El Sheikh city together with Naama Bay, Hay el Nour, Hadaba, Rowaysat, Montazah and Shark's Bay form a metropolitan area.

Naama Bay , the busy and bustling heart of Sharm El Sheikh, is conveniently located north of the city. The seafront boasts a beautiful paved walkway following the full sweep of the bay, and most hotels here have their own private beaches with comfortable amenities ranging from 5 stars resort hotels to basic accommodation needs.

Ras Om el-Sid is Sharm's No # 2 district, a plateau rising gracefully above the translucent blue of the surrounding gulf, on the southern tip of over 50 km of uninterrupted beachfront.

Nabq Bay is a 'Protected Area' embracing the Gulf of Aqaba coast and its hinterland between Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab. This unique 600 square kilometer area of sand dunes, alluvial plains and salt marches supports a relatively diverse animal and plant life. Gazelles, hyrax, nubian ibex and foxes, as well as a variety of reptile and invertebrate species, have been recorded here. Birdwatchers particularly enjoy sightings of herons, spoonbills, ospreys, gulls, terns and storks.

Shark's Bay is also nearby, and again is a growing resort community with more and more to offer, along with several diving centers.

The small harbor known as Sharm El Maya is located next to the civil harbor, has accommodations for boats, and includes a Yacht Club with rooms.

IDEAS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY - SINAI BIRDWATCHING

Known as a migration corridor, Egypt attracts over 280 additional species of birds. Millions of birds pass through the country on their way from Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Siberia and Central Asia to eastern and southern Africa each autumn, and on their way back each spring.

In addition to the common bird spotting areas such as Lake Burullus (Nile Delta), Lake Manzala (West Post Said), Wadi Natrun (northwest Cairo), Sinai birding potential has come to light in recent years. Ras Muhammed south Sinai is one of Egypt's best known protected areas and nesting ground for Osprey and Sooty Falcons, while White Storks pass overhead by the thousands during the fall. Herons and shorebirds are plentiful here, and the nearby Isle of Tiran is an important breeding ground for Osprey, gulls and terns.

The Nabq Protected Area, between Sharm and Dahab, is a great spotting area for hoopoe lark and wheatears. Dark and light phase western reef heron, pied kingfishers, sooty falcons and white eyed gulls are all resident. Also within the park good views of osprey are guaranteed. For access to this area you will need to travel to the north end of the Nabq Hotel area. It is only really practical to get there by rental car or a taxi due to the distance and time involved. The main road in the park is not bad but to venture further a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary.
