IDEAS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY - SINAI BIRDWATCHING
UPDATED 29.09.2009
Known as a migration corridor, Egypt attracts over 280 additional species of birds. Millions of birds pass through the country on their way from Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Siberia and Central Asia to eastern and southern Africa each autumn, and on their way back each spring. |
In addition to the common bird spotting areas such as Lake Burullus (Nile Delta), Lake Manzala (West Post Said), Wadi Natrun (northwest Cairo), Sinai birding potential has come to light in recent years. Ras Muhammed south Sinai is one of Egypt's best known protected areas and nesting ground for Osprey and Sooty Falcons, while White Storks pass overhead by the thousands during the fall. Herons and shorebirds are plentiful here, and the nearby Isle of Tiran is an important breeding ground for Osprey, gulls and terns. |
The Nabq Protected Area, between Sharm and Dahab, is a great spotting area for hoopoe lark and wheatears. Dark and light phase western reef heron, pied kingfishers, sooty falcons and white eyed gulls are all resident. Also within the park good views of osprey are guaranteed. For access to this area you will need to travel to the north end of the Nabq Hotel area. It is only really practical to get there by rental car or a taxi due to the distance and time involved. The main road in the park is not bad but to venture further a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary. |
